Hailing from the underground Manchester metal scene, Collibus are a five-piece female-fronted progressive metal band of tour-de-force proportions.
Having won the 2013 Parliamentary Rock the House Discretionary Metal Award, Collibus made history by becoming the first heavy metal band ever to play a set in the House of Commons; had the music video for their winning track Dead Inside featured on Scuzz; and released their debut album The False Awakening all in a matter of months.
The January debut album launch was impressively followed by a quick succession of major festivals snapping up Collibus onto their lineup – with Download Festival, Graspop Metal Meeting, Sonisphere Festival, Wacken Open Air.
With a firm emphasis on melody, although Dream Theater have become a synonym for melodic-but-technical prog metal, Collibus are distinguished from the UK prog powerhouse in the regard that melody is made to be the most prominent aspect of the sound. Even if they may occasionally jump into a melodic territory, the music is built on steady song structures over the hi-tech instrumentation one tends to expect from the genre. Leave It All Behind and Break The Silence are two examples of Collibus’s impressive ability to merge the longform scope of prog metal with the tight songwriting craft you would usually only find in songs of a more typical length. They can be commended for putting an emphasis on something that the prog metal style often ignores. Each of the pieces on this album feel excellently paced and structured. The concise approach does not lessen the excitement of the instrumental sections that are usually asked in the genre. Instrumental parts do not feel restrained; it’s as if they complement Fox's beautiful voice and vice versa. A very good example for that is Hollow ,which comes with warm, uplifting sound that spreads all over the record.
